It’s time for a new approach to governing

Thank you delegates of SD54 for taking the time of your busy schedules to attend the district endorsing convention.

All of us have a part to play in the great state of Minnesota and fulfilling the duty of a delegate is an important one. I’m looking forward to meeting the citizens of our senate district. I know many of you are having a difficult time making ends meet. As a small business owner in Cottage Grove with a family, I fully understand the uneasiness of stretching every dollar before the next paycheck. The SD54 senate race isn’t about the candidates – it’s about each and every one of you. It is you that are the most important variables in this election equation and I’m looking forward to listening to your concerns.

I know many of you are concerned about the direction our education system has taken. As a parent, I understand that nothing is more important than the education of our children. We have only one chance to get it right. There aren’t any “do overs”. The legislature continues to reward teachers unions and create legislation that stymies school choice. Rather than eliminating or handcuffing charter schools (and private schools for that matter), legislators need to embrace school choice by decreasing mandates and providing more and better options for teachers, parents, students and administrators.

Minnesota currently ranks 30th in job creation and 32nd in income growth. Immediate tax relief will help businesses to thrive, improve the job market and improve the quality of life for our families. A good start would be to repeal the estate and gift tax. This tax creates fewer investments, reduces economic growth and leads to fewer jobs. Together, we can begin moving the state of Minnesota back toward the top so our families will have the opportunity to flourish and thrive.

My father served 43 years in the military. I know the sacrifice our military men and women and their families make in serving to protect the liberties of this great nation. Currently, Minnesota imposes taxes on military benefits. We need to make our state more attractive to veterans by ending the insulting tax on those who have risked everything for our country.

Most of our senior citizens live on a fixed income. Many are moving out of the state in search of a life where their incomes can be stretched a little farther. Our seniors scrimped, went without, and tried to save a little for a rainy day to make a better life for their families. They have worked hard all their lives to earn their benefits for viable retirement. We must eliminate the tax on social security benefits as it pushes retirees out of the state and penalizes those who desire to stay near their friends and family. Currently, only seven states tax social security benefits. Minnesota does not have to be one of them. Let’s remove Minnesota from the list of these “scrooge” states so our seniors can remain and welcome back those that have left to the land of 10,000 lakes.

I’m sure there many issues and concerns you have that I didn’t address in this letter. Please feel free to email me at lholmstadt4mnsenate@gmail.com or call me at 651-505-0054. I’m here to listen.
