Minnesota Student Survey: Interfering in a family’s very personal and private information

Senator Bruce D. Anderson (R) District 29

Senator Bruce D. Anderson (R) District 29 – Minnesota Senate

By Senator Bruce Anderson, 1/28/2016.

Hello Neighbors,

Every three years, Minnesota students in grades five, eight, nine, and eleven are given something called the Minnesota Student Survey. The survey is filled with intense questions about every aspect of our children’s lives – how they spend their time; school and disciplinary history, relationships with parents, sexual orientation and activity, alcohol and drug activity, and more.

The survey will be given to students again in 2016, between January and May.

The survey, which parents have told me is very intrusive, is administered by the Departments of Education, Health, Public Safety, and Human Services, and assumes the state has a right to know these intimate details about your lives. But this information is only the business of your family. The parents I have talked with view this as the long arm of the government interfering in a family’s very personal and private information.

What many parents don’t know is that they can opt their children out of the survey. If you wish to opt out, contact your children’s school and ask them how to do so; typically there is a brief form to fill out and return to the school.

The Minnesota Child Protection League has a great article about the survey, with links to the questions students will be asked this year. You can view their article at the following link: http://cplaction.com/alert/its-time-to-opt-out-of-the-minnesota-student-survey/

Sincerely,

Bruce Anderson

As for the upcoming Hastings event, Senator Sieben and I will be discussing legislation that was approved during the 2015 session, as well as key issues that could be debated during the 2016 session.
