Rep Denny McNamara’s Capitol Update: Special session of Legislature focuses on disaster relief

Hello from the State Capitol,

On September 9, lawmakers returned to the State Capitol to take part in a one day special session called by Governor Dayton in order to deal with disaster relief.

I was pleased to support this effort. Just one year ago, Hastings was leveled with strong winds and it, along with Dakota County, was included in part of a nineteen county $168 million disaster relief package. We all remember how thousands of trees were snapped and caused significant damage to our neighborhoods. Now other areas of the state are dealing with costs and clean up from storms and flooding in late June.

At times like this, it’s important for lawmakers to put their differences aside and help out those residents and communities that are struggling and that’s exactly what we did on Monday. This disaster relief package gives the 18 counties that were declared a federal disaster area the funds they were looking for.

It was unfortunate we were not able to fix the Democrats’ tax increase problems during special session. Even Governor Dayton said this was a mistake and needs to be fixed.

Prior to special session, the governor and legislative leadership discussed eliminating three tax increases that had been enacted by the Democrats during the 2013 regular legislative session: warehousing and storage taxes, a tax on telecommunications devices, and forcing farmers to pay an equipment repair tax. But they could not come to an agreement on how to deal with these problems, so all of them were left off the special session agenda and we chose to focus solely on disaster relief.

I know there is plenty of bipartisan support to repeal these tax increases, and I look forward to eliminating them during the 2014 session.

Keep in touch,
Denny

BPOU meeting Sept 10, Meet gubernatorial candidate Dave Thompson

Important-DateDear Republican friends,

My name is Chad Rediske, and I Chair the Senate District 54 BPOU. I am writing to let you know that fellow officers, and myself, within the BPOU, are actively working to strengthen our presence in the district, and would like to engage our Republican friends.

Whether you have been active with the BPOU in the past, have only participated in the caucuses, or just follow conservative causes, I am openly offering an invite to you all to join us as we begin to build momentum for the 2014 elections. We have much work to do, and welcome any assistance you may be willing to offer.

This past legislative session, Minnesotans bore witness to the dangers of complete DFL rule. All of us have either already seen, or will see, an increase in our taxes, both directly and indirectly. The DFL is not done with removing rights we have had since the founding of our state and country. If that wasn’t enough, they have found a way to unionize small private businesses (home daycares)!

It is my belief that the longer we continue down this path, the further we get from allowing our children and grandchildren from experiencing the greatness, the way of life, that many of us have come to know. We are long overdue when it comes to taking back our communities, our state, and our country. Whether you are a libertarian Republican, a moderate Republican, a social conservative, or fiscal conservative, I think we all agree that most, if not all legislation that grows the size, scope, or cost of government is not in the best interest of society.

As I stated, the BPOU is working on a number of ways to reach out to all citizens who feel that things need to change. As part of the process, we need to give you an opportunity to know and meet the people that would like to represent us in the next election cycle. While we are not in the heart of election season, the BPOU will be hosting many candidates for various offices in government over the course of time from now until Election day.

On Tuesday, September 10th, at 7:00 pm, we invite you to join us at Ruby Tuesday’s in Cottage Grove to meet gubernatorial candidate, and current Minnesota State Senator out of Lakeville, MN Senator Dave Thompson. We will be holding a normal BPOU meeting, and also give Senator Thompson time to introduce himself. Please join us for dinner and conversation; we would love to have you. If you are so inclined, please email me at crediske@comcast.net to let me know you plan on attending.

Thank you!
