“There were many important issues at stake for union construction workers this biennium,” said Kyle Makarios, the union’s Director of Government Affairs. “There were threats and there were opportunities. Thanks to a bipartisan majority of level-headed, pro-jobs legislators, the threats were averted and opportunities seized upon.”

Special Session report from Rep Denny McNamara

Representative Denny McNamara

Representative Denny McNamara

By Rep. Denny McNamara, 8/24/2012

Hello from St. Paul,

On August 24, I joined an overwhelming majority of House and Senate lawmakers in approving a nearly $168 million disaster relief package that will help flood victims in northern and central Minnesota rebuild their homes, businesses, and communities, and assist those of us in Hastings, Dakota County, and the surrounding areas that suffered significant wind damage.

The bill provides clean-up assistance and restoration funding for the residents and business owners in the 19 counties affected by storms. Local roads and bridges will also be repaired and reconstructed, and impacted county governments will not be forced to provide local funding in order to receive federal flood assistance grants. I’m pleased the state stepped up to pick up the share for local communities during their time of need.

While the majority of the damage happened in Duluth and other parts of northeastern Minnesota, Dakota County was part of the Presidential Declaration of a Major Disaster due to the strong winds that uprooted and snapped thousands of trees and caused significant damage.

I was pleased to see strong bipartisan support for this proposal. At times like this, it’s important for lawmakers to put their differences aside and help those who are truly in need. I’m proud to say we did just that on Friday, and have now allocated needed funds to the communities that suffered severe storm damage.

Keep in touch,
